CA Workers' Comp Board Seeks 24% Increase
Celia Lamb Staff writer
A state and industry organization that recommends rates for workers’ compensation
insurance has approved a 24.4 percent increase in the “pure premium,” or base rate,
starting July 1.
The Workers Compensation Insurance Ratings Bureau Governing Committee will file
that rate recommendation with the state Department of Insurance on March 27 and
a public hearing is planned for April 28, said ratings bureau spokesman Jack Hannan.
Of the 24.4 percent increase, 17.6 percent is because of increasing medical costs
and 5.8 percent is due to the estimated impact of three cases heard by the Workers
Compensation Appeals Board, a seven-member board appointed by the governor
to review workers’ compensation petitions.
