Default Should I Become an Accountant?

Hello everyone,

I recently graduated with a bachelors degree in paralegal studies, but cannot find a job. I'm just about giving up on my job search. My question to everyone is whether the accounting filed is better? Is it worth it to get a degre in accounting, or is the job field the same? Also, how difficult would it be to land a job with one of the "Big 4"? My ultimate goal would be to get a second bachelors degree (I can do this in 2 years since I already have the general education classes done), get a decent job, and then get an MBA. Would having an MBA make me marketable, even if I'm not a CPA?

Thanks!

To be honest at the moment every sector is struggling! I would perhaps advise thinking about what you want to do and then start looking for jobs or addihng to your qualifications!?

At the moment finding a job anywhere is a full time job! It takes a while to get an interview as there are so many applicants for each and every position out there right now!

Think about what you want and then follow that - trying a bit of this that and the other never really works for anyone you know?

i have to agree -- the job market's tight right now in most sectors, the real question is more 'What will you enjoy doing/working as?' Figure out your direction, and if you decide to get your MBA make sure to compare the typical accounting salary and how much you would make if you were to open your own practice (going the CPA route). Give it some thought, write everything out, talk to other accountants, etc. first. Good luck!

I can't see any reason to get a 2nd bachelor's degree when you can move forward and pursue a master's degree in accounting. That's what I'm currently doing (undergraduate degree in psychology). In my opinion, the master's degree will open up additional doors for you. You will still be eligible to sit for the CPA exam, have the credentials to teach college level courses, and possibly receive a higher paying job with your advanced degree. I have a friend who received her MBA about 1 1/2 years ago and she told me recently "don't get an MBA, they are a dime a dozen." And this is not meant to offend anyone. I'm merely sharing someone's opinion with you.

Hope this helps.

I think you need to consider carefully whether you want to pursue a career in accounting as dawn says there are a lot of MBA qualified people out there in these tough times. Speak to an employer direct and ask them what they'd be looking for and which person they would regard more suitable for the job based on the courses you plan to complete.

The masters degree in accounting like mentioned above is perfect. Then you don't need an MBA as they are less marketable these days. I think your much more likely to succeed with an Masters in Accountancy, especiall because of current market condition and the fact CPA are always going to be needed.

You might wanna try bookkeeping jobs online which won't require you to work fulltime.Try odesk, elance and getafreelancer, online bookkeeping jobs would suffice while you take your Masterals in Accountancy that will really boot your profile. Accounting professionals will always be in demand no matter how bad the economy is, the competition will lies on who got the profile and competencies to perform well.
