    Default General Career Advice

I currently work in the medical field, but I am looking to make a career change. I am working on an online degree in accounting. I have no desire to work at any of the Big 4.

I would like to work for a non-profit or in the insurance industry (underwriting, etc). Can anyone offer any advice on the best way to get an accounting job for a non-profit or at an insurance company?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Angio,

I can understand you don't want to work for a big company. Maybe you should get in touch with some local accountancy firms and find out who their key partners are. A simple Google search will bring up the last charity event or networking event they attended. It may seem a little unorthodox but we're in tough times at the mo and only the bold efforts will be noticed!

Accounts payable/receivable is more of an assistant accountant role. This sounds like another assistant accountant role but it could be a good foot in the door for you.If you want to work as an accountant you are better off getting a bachelors degree or if you already have one, do your CPA qualification. That will open up more doors in an accounting firm.

I know you mentioned you're not interested in the Big 4. Honestly, however, if you want to pursue a high-level accounting career in any industry (non-profit included), the Big 4 is usually one of the best places to start.

Working for the Big 4 opens the door to many opportunities that you would otherwise not have.

I guess my question is, "What is it that the Big 4 don't offer that a small insurance or non-profit could?" I'm not trying to sway either way, but I think that having some solid answers to that question might help to steer you in the right direction.
